Healthy Snack Guidelines

Our school district is supporting good nutrition through our Wellness Policy and strongly encourages the distribution of nutrient dense foods for all school functions and activities. Nutrient dense foods are those foods that provide students with calories rich in the nutrient content needed to be healthy. The following guidelines are being provided in order to make the task of choosing healthy snacks easier.

Wellness Criteria for Snack Foods:

  • No more than 8 grams of fat per serving or
  • No more than 35% of the calories coming from fat
  • No more than 35% of the calories coming from sugar or other sweeteners

When dealing with serious food allergies, please check the ingredient label to be sure that the product is free of the allergen. Products can change without notice to the public, so foods that may not have had an allergen in the past, may begin to have the allergen if production sites or recipes have changed. The best way to be sure that a food is free of an allergen is to read the nutrition label and search the ingredients for the allergen and look for a warning about an allergen just under the ingredients section. (However, please first check with your school nurse regarding specific food allergy guidelines for your student’s school.)

We suggest that students bring for snacks:

Water (bottled) or only 100% natural juice (no sugar added)
Flavored waters with less than 30 grams of sugar per 12 oz. bottle
Low fat products (such as low fat or sugar free cookies or crackers)
Only low fat or fat-free fruit snacks
Fresh fruit and veggies with low fat dips
Low-fat or part-skim cheeses

THANKS FOR HELPING TO SUPPORT THE BEST FOR YOUR STUDENT(S)!!!
